As June comes to a close fight fans from across the region and beyond are in for a very special treat as boxing Hall of Famer, ‘Gentleman’ Gerry Cooney pays a visit to Cannock’s exclusive venue, The Premier Suite.
The boxing legend who won the Golden Gloves Middleweight Championship at just 16 turned professional in 1977 embarking on a successful career in the heavyweight division where his vicious style and trademark left hook served him well as he ripped through his opponents and climbed up the rankings.
Alongside his glowing personality and towering 6ft 6in frame the man from Long Island, New York’s visit comes just weeks after celebrating the publication of his book ‘Gentleman Gerry: A Contender in the Ring, a Champion in Recovery.’
Complete with photographs from esteemed sports photographer Joe DiMaggio and stories directly from Cooney himself, this book offers an unparalleled look at ‘Gentleman’ Gerry Cooney’s inspiring life story.
Signed copies will be available on the night alongside an opportunity to have a photograph taken with the great man himself.
In a professional career spanning from 1977 to 1990 Cooney had 31 professional fights winning 28 with 24 by KO.
He is ranked number 53 on The Ring‘s list of “100 Greatest Punchers of All Time”.
